Normally in a city like this, shadows are a bad thing. They're for people to jump out of when you're walking on a dark night. They're for magical beings to spring out of another dimension when others aren't looking, places for beings to retreat into when wounded, licking the blood off damaged body parts.
But God, was I happy to be in the shadows today.
I left Falconer and her goons at the barbed wire fence a dozen yards back. Lucky for me, they didn't follow.
I retreated into the shaded side of the warehouse, navigating around broken glass and boards until I found a loading bay I could hide under.
I pulled myself against a cold brick wall, catching my breath. Only then did I notice the crazy cold. The wind whipped through the small alley, stirring up a rustle of snowflakes that flurried past me and settled on my hands as I rubbed them together to stay warm.
My hands were frozen. Iâd lost my coat running from Falconer. My boots were caked in snow and ice from the running. I couldn't feel my legs.
Get it together, Aisha.
Get it together, girl!
I gathered my thoughts.
I was safe.
For now.
I wasn't stuck in a clandestine warehouse with a weird vampire and his demon-hunting Order of the Asshats or whatever they were called.
That was a positive.
I couldn't go back.
Falconer and her goons might have given up the chase, but they might have set magical detection charms that could catch me if I passed through them.
If I didn't move fast enough, they might set magical charms in the path they thought I might take.
Shit.
Only thing going for me right now was the element of unpredictability.
But Falconer could read Dariusâs and Destinyâs minds and learn about me through them.
Double shit.
It would take her at least five minutes to drive back to the warehouse and interrogate my cousins.
Another positive.
Shaking snow out of my hair, I started down the shadowed alley.
I hadn't decided what I was going to do yet, but I knew I'd figure it out.
First thing I had to do was figure out a way out of this property. Its busted frame loomed into the snowy sky. The smell of char and urine tinged the air. Something told me to keep moving, that the insides of this place weren't worth exploring.
I reached the end of the alley. There was another fence. Beyond, a gravel field strung with trash. At the other end of the field, an empty street. A perfect getaway.
And then a blue glimmer caught the corner of my eye.
A glyph beacon, hovering mid-air in the center of the field.
A magical charm.
Could it have been Falconerâs?
Couldn't have been. There wouldn't have been enough time to set it.
That charm could have been from anyone, and it could have been any kind of trap.
I scanned the clearing again.
No other way out.
I cursed to myself.
This was the last thing I had time for today.
I checked my phone.
No service.
I needed to make my way back to the inner city. Then I could call a cab and get the hell out of here.
